Edinburgh Trial, Sat 3rd October

We left home at about 10am on Friday intending to go to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas in the afternoon before getting an early night ready for the early start at 4.52am. The journey via the M25, M1 and A5 was uneventful and we arrived at Alrewas in good time. The NMA was the idea of John Major in 1998 and it consists of a large stone memorial to all those killed in service since WW11 and grassland with trees planted for interest groups and many miltary regiments. It is a very moving place.

The trial itself was held in very dry conditions with a very high but not cold wind making marshalling, spectatiing and biking difficult. Putwell was terribly rough and Bamford was OK if you took it slowly which MTT does really well although we queued for nearly 90 mins this year. The trial ended with Dudwell section and special test both of which were excellent although I failed the section due to running tyres at 12psi when 8 would have been more sensible. Having failed half way up we had to turn on the hill and had a slightly hairy moment when I nudged a tree and bent the front wing.

Dinner at the Pavilion in Buxton was excellent and we slept well of course. We had a pleasant drive down the A515 to Ashbourne and then went via the A50 to our friends Brain and Janet near Loughborough where we spent a relaxing day and then came home via Foxton Locks, the A14,M11,M25 and home over the Dartford Bridge. In all we did approx 650 miles, the only problem was a loose exhaust quickly fixed with a spare UNF nut.

I will make a concerted effort to fit 9" rear brakes and the Carl Taylor diff before the Exeter.
